New strong cooperation ensures better temporary coverage for schools

21 / 5 - 2019

The entrepreneurial company Substy A/S has developed an intelligent system, which sends qualified temporary teachers with the right competencies to the vocational classes in the schools. The system has proven its worth for over a year, and therefore Denmark's largest edtech supplier IST ApS is now initiating a close collaboration with Substy A/S to further develop the product and spread it to the more than 1,500 schools that use IST's solutions.

In the political agreement of January regarding primary school, it was emphasized that temporary coverage in schools must be more qualified. "Vikarlæggeren Pro" is a digital planning tool that makes it possible for primary schools to live up to the political requirements and thereby give the students better and more qualified work hours.

"IST is very much about the primary school's well-being. Our vision is that everyone has the right to learn more, and we live that vision every day with our many solutions for primary schools. With our new solution for temporary coverage, which we launch in collaboration with Substy, we help primary schools save time and resources, while increasing the academic quality of the individual school class. With "Vikarlæggeren Pro", we can help secure the best qualified temporary teachers for the pupils in primary school," says Head of IST Business Region Denmark, Anne Brink Pedersen.

A full year in primary school is covered by temporary teachers
A new study from the National Research and Analysis Center for Welfare shows that almost 32 per cent of the planned short-term absence is covered by emergency attendants, who are often newly hatched students.

A study initiated by the Ministry of Education from spring 2018 furthermore shows that just under 11 per cent of the planned hours in the primary schools are held by a temporary teacher. This is equivalent to the fact that a whole year of primary school consists of classes with a temporary teacher.

What can "Vikarlæggeren Pro" do?
"We have developed an algorithm together with researchers from DTU Compute, which in a few seconds finds the most optimal temporary coverage on the basis of the temporary teachers' unemployment, professionalism and educational competencies. The algorithm also takes into account which classes the temporary teacher has good knowledge of, and it ensures to avoid intermediate hours in the temporary schedule. Finally, the solution automatically notifies all temporary workers," says Nicklas Kany, CEO of Substy A/S.
