School digitalization; a shared responsibility

School digitalization; a shared responsibility

1 / 7 - 2019

During the last decade the school has changed remarkably, and the digitalization has been a major reason. The changes bring big opportunities, but all stakeholders must actively work together for the students to benefit from the new technology in the best way.

The digitalization process has not only changed the society as a whole;  schools in particular are highly affected by it. The digital revolution is ongoing, and this demands that different stakeholders work actively together for the students to benefit from this change in the best way.  The suppliers of the systems must, together with authorities, governments, and schools, take responsibility for this change, and make sure it is being implemented in the best way.

Ensure a high competence level
One of the biggest challenges with school digitalization is to run the change process and to secure the digital competence among co-workers. Both people involved in procurement, but also the users of the systems. If the users lack competence, considering the communication solutions available today, the consequences for the individual can be huge. The users must have full control over what they communicate, and to whom. The digitalization can never fully replace the human control, and therefore it is important that the competence develops in the same pace as the technology. There must also be processer and routines developed for a secure handling of data.

Another challenge facing the schools' digitalization is laws and regulations. To increase the speed of the digitalization, standards and regulations are crucial. Furthermore, to run a digitalization process in the right way, with the right effect, a high level of competence in the buyer is required. Here, all stakeholders must take a common responsibility, putting the students at the center of discussion.

Information sharing and support in teaching
At IST, we take these challenges seriously, and all products in the IST Everyday package are developed for the evermore digital world and school. The digitalization process has enabled sharing of information between different stakeholders in completely new ways. Now teachers, as well as students and parents, can follow the student in the system, both during and after teaching hours. The parents will be notified when the student is absent, which allow students who risk falling out of the school system to get help in time. The accessibility for students with different needs increases with use of resources such as voice synthesis and information videos.

The schools' digitalization increases the accessibility and flexibility, leading to more time for the students. The technology also simplifies the documentation handling and the communication with school, and creates good opportunities for support in the class room. When all stakeholders take a common responsibility for this development, students, as well as teachers and parents, will benefit from the opportunities the digitalization can bring.
